Everyone Feels Helpless. But We’re Not
RESISTANCE: Things You Can Do to Fight Fascism & Preserve Personal Freedoms
SPEAK OUT—EARLY, OFTEN AND EVERYWHERE
- Don’t “wait to see what happens” before speaking out against Trump. If we speak out now and it turns out we were wrong about the danger of fascism, then we can be grateful we were wrong. If we wait to speak out until after fascism has taken hold, we can never wind back the clock; it will be too late.
- Speaking up only once or twice, when it’s convenient and opportune, is not enough. The power of our voices is stronger every time we use it. Each of us must take every chance we get to strengthen it.
- Speak about our fears of fascism, and the consequences if you are proven correct, to everyone in your life.
- Talk one on one with family, friends, acquaintances, co-workers and associates, even when it might be uncomfortable or provoke disagreement.
- Speak out online, including social media, email, texts or other communications. Emphasize your genuine concern for everyone’s personal freedoms rather than anyone’s political party or other political issues.
- Speak out with letters to the editor, legislators and other elected officials, federal, state and local. Send a lot of letters, emails, text messages and calls to legislators. They really do pay close attention to the complaints and concerns of their constituents. Send a lot of messages and encourage like-minded friends and family to do the same. You can’t overdo it.
TAKE TO THE STREETS—IF THERE’S A PROTEST AGAINST AUTHORITARIAN ACTIONS, BE THERE IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN
- If there are no protests in your area, organize your own. The streets are a powerful way to amplify our voices.
USE THE POWER OF YOUR POCKETBOOK TO PUNISH EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTS FASCISM, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY
- Withhold your business, and any other form of financial support, from big and small businesses and from individuals that you know have supported, and especially those who continue to support, Trump, his actions, or his policies.
- Boycott Trump supporters, take your business elsewhere. If you own their stock, sell it. If they have any large shareholders, boycott them too. If you can, boycott their customers and suppliers and business partners. Tell them often why they lost your business.
- When someone in business speaks out publicly against Trump, take your business and your financial support to them, and let them know that you are doing so because of your opposition to Trump and the threat of fascism that he represents.
- If you’re uncertain whether a particular business supports Trump, then delay or withhold your business from them anyway until you get a definite answer
